“Cinder-Nechah to the rescue….Let’s do this!”
– Dr. Nechah Hochstein 1971-2012
“An idea is a feat of association”
– Robert Frost
My book is dedicated to the memory of my best friend, first and most treasured mentor, Apple™ Techie/fellow Mac Girl from way back when, Trekkie pal, Buffy buddy, and all around hero, Dr. Natalie “Nechah” Hochstein Psy.D. She was a true scholar, lady, and a brilliant analyst of human behavior. She effortlessly and elegantly taught me so much, from the time I met her in late childhood, until she lost her valiant battle to breast cancer, in December 2012. Most of all, she taught me to work hard, think like a child, laugh often, and readily share information with others in need. She was my sister in arms, my cheerleader, and my muse. She is sorely missed, but echoes of her vast wisdom live on; in my work and actions, on a daily basis, and in the words found on the pages of the soon to be published book.
My maternal grandmother used to love sewing, needlepoint in particular. I was always amazed as a little girl, when I watched her work. I couldn’t get over how one side of her tapestry was a mess, a jumble of discordance. There were threads everywhere, no emerging likeness of anything I could identify. But the other side of the tapestry, the side she was working on, slowly revealed the picture she had in mind; a butterfly, a field of flowers, a home on a lake. Nechah and I frequently pondered the meaning of life’s tapestry, and the idea behind the Butterfly Effect. We talked about the importance of knowledge and observation. We tried to make sense of seemingly disparate patterns that form over time. We wanted to understand how people’s behavior results from collective experiences, and how skewed perceptions of those experiences can then interrupt one’s path.
My book is about sharing the emerging patterns of entrepreneurship I have learned, from Nechah, from my own experiences, and from constantly learning from others. People whose paths have intersected with mine, deliberately or randomly. Only I believe that nothing is random. I do believe that patterns are everything. Patterns shape behavior and perceptions. Patterns can be found in almost everything, and especially in entrepreneurship.
There is a saying, “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he eats for life”. This book is meant to do just that. It is written from the perspective of a “child-centric behaviorist ,” as Nechah used to call me. It is about giving female entrepreneurs a behavioral blueprint, and practical tools for the toolbox, when fishing in the waters of your choice. It is about harnessing your nurturing psyche and proficiency with technology, and balancing the two. It is about synthesizing innate and learned skills, to help facilitate your own personal emancipation; from outdated arenas, from fear of the unknown, and start you on your own endeavor to grow, change, and soar.
“Join the Journey for Change” has been my company’s motto, since I launched Socially Speaking LLC in 2010. I invite you to join the journey too. Welcome to my new inner landscape, which has influenced my philosophy and journey as an entrepreneur. It has shaped my ideas and approach, which I have dubbed The NICE Reboot, and the offshoot, The NICE Initiative. This is my entrepreneurial footprint for others to see, and maybe follow initially, before forging their own path, and embarking on their own journey for change. Change is scary. Change is hard. But change is good. Change will nourish your soul and set your creativity free. Change will reshape the world, one person and deed at a time. It’s time.
To ensure that my book is part of a collective active process of embracing change, I will be launching The NICE Initiative for Female Entrepreneurship, and am in the middle of creating a teaser trailer for the new YouTube channel “storytellergal” and Vimeo channel TBA.
